Every since I tried to bring technology into my mathematics classes by introducing student blogging, QR codes, and computer assisted programmes like Mathletes, I have been searching for something that really engages the students and requires them to think critically around curriculum learning outcomes. A few months ago, as I was in the middle of a #21stedchat, I came across the concept of Augmented Reality and became hooked on its potential. A potential, I must add, that I haven’t yet reached. I started to follow Drew Minock’s blog and tried to delve into #AR to see both how it might enhance learning through engagement and how I could introduce it to teachers in my school.
From this, I have started to search through the application Aurasma as a tool for creating and viewing augmented realities. The opportunities are endless, especially at the elementary levels, as seen with this great youtube clip:
By creating or augmenting the view of reality, students can get more depth and insight into the areas that they are studying. They also have the opportunity to create and share their own augmented realities to demonstrate understanding of the curricula learning outcomes.
I have also been trying out the iPhone app, Fetch Lunch Rush, where you print out the cards with representations of numbers that can be used to answer questions that come up.
I am still exploring the possibilities with Augmented Reality and look forward to hearing how other educators are using #AR in their classroom.
