As the first week has finished, I am setting up some goals or plans for this year. The first plan was to complete a ‘daily five’ and go into five different classrooms every day. This turned out to be more difficult than I had thought, as other issues that seemed more pressing came up. I have modified that daily five to a weekly 25 to hopefully accommodate some of the unknowns of my day to day. The second plan looked at developing relationships with staff and students to foster a climate or culture of caring. This, I believe will be an ongoing goal that will take a lot of work with club leaders and the staff to create a vibrant, inclusive community within the school (not that Centennial is not already there, I just think that we can have some growth in this area).
My third goal is all about technology. Over the summer, I re-read Will Richardson’s Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts and Why School, and Nilofer Merchant’s 11 Rules for Creating Value in the #SocialEra. From these, and other books, twitter chats, I believe that the role of an administrator includes supporting teachers when they wish to try to bring technology into the classroom. There are so many options out there, and I would love to see some of the teachers at Centennial experiment with some of those options. Chromebooks, iPads, twitter, blogs, Wiki’s, Video and Photo applications, and others are changing the way teachers and students are being engaged with the curriculum.
In British Columbia, there are some changes coming to the curriculum, grad requirements, standardized testing, and possibly reporting. With all these possible changes, teachers will be given the opportunity to explore ways of introducing technology into the classroom. My personal goal on this is to bring Augmented Reality (or AR) to the school. There may be some teachers already edging their way towards AR, but my plan is to help all teachers that wish to move in some direction with technology.
This will be an ongoing plan/goal for the entire school year, for me.
Next post will be on my fourth plan/goal: personal development, growth and reflection.
