As I searched through my PLN to connect and to learn about issues around my professional growth plan (PGP), I stumbled upon the ETMOOC event through twitter, google + and blogs. This learning opportunity has opened up my PLN to include educators across the country and world that are all working towards understanding the connections between technology and education. MOOC’s are Massive Open Online Courses where the participants are also the leaders. Check out the introductory letter here.
I have been using technology in the classroom for most of my career, starting with the simple (science clips, math songs and stories, etc), moving through the cumbersome (for me) SmartBoard to the use of tablets, clickers and now smartphones in the classroom. When I moved into administration, I felt that I should be promoting and supporting teachers who wished to embrace/try/experiment with these new technologies, but found that the daily grind of being an administrator often prevented me from having those key discussions with teachers.
I am hoping that by being part of this ETMOOC, (I love the acronym), I will be able to better support the teachers in my school and district. Hopefully, coming from a place of understanding the new technologies and improve student engagement and learning. As a participant in the course, I will talk about my experiences and the connections between the ETMOOC and my PGP (my first post on my PGP is here) and how improving student learning and engagement can improve the school’s culture and community.
